When the Church ceases to teach the full Gospel – including morals and all ten sacraments – the flock is left to the wolves. Even with Catholic resurgence of some courage from more Bishops – thank God – we are dishonest in not confronting the truth that massive numbers of Catholics have torn out of the Catechism great hunks of pages dedicated to Catholic morality.
The controversy in SF is clear proof of the pudding. Catholics are practicing the gospel of secularism because it tastes so good as compared to the solid food of our faith.
Honesty demands that even if all 350 American Bishops started proclaiming the truth that Jesus has never offered a clause to “opt out” of Gospel morality, His priests in huge numbers – good men who may totally accept the full Gospel, still use every excuse in the book to “opt out” of uncompromising teaching morality from the pulpit and that’s all we have to counter the media.
We starve when the pretense of current guidelines to preach the Gospel on Sunday has been interpreted to mean that the Gospel of God’s Love never addresses morality. You’re not reading the Gospel if you fail to see the whole Gospel. So, I urge pastors to stop decrying Catholics following the morality of the age instead of the truth. Why shouldn’t they? The gospel of the age is preached using every media outlet there is almost and the only place most Catholics have a chance to hear the Gospel is when they attend Sunday Mass where it is rarely fully spoken. Catholic media reach a tiny fraction of those who call themselves Catholic.
Is the only excuse we can come up with our fear that some Catholics will walk out of church if the pastor causes them to feel uncomfortable? Their kids in public schools are bombarded with every false doctrine imaginable while parents claim that they aren’t ready to hear moral truth in church!
